Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cope with getting laid off and how to prepare yourself for a job loss in the future?

You should also prepare yourself financially. Always have a financial cushion just in case you do lose your job. Many companies lay off quality workers that have had their job eliminated due to a merger, outsourcing, replacement with machine or computer system etc. Think of it as an opportunity to evaluate your life, perhaps you may have dreamt of starting a business or going back to school for a long time. This can be an encouraging sign for you to pursue something different than what you are used to. Sometimes because of our own personal circumstances we don't have the luxuries to pursuing a risky ventures, if that is the case I would continue looking for a job within your field. Obama proposed a grant to help those that are unemployed pay for education. Go to http://www.opportunity.gov to find out more. Interviewing is like dating, both parties have to feel like their is a mutual interest. Therefore, it's important to show your personality and know what you are talking

Just think...it wasn't meant to be. There may be bigger and better opportunities out there available for you. Keep a positive attitude and stay in the game. You can never prepare for job loss in the future, but when it does happen, I am a firm believer in doing whatever it takes to make ends meet. I work a full time job, have 2 kids in school and sports, and also dj karaoke shows on certain nights. Keep busy with whatever you cn find in these harsh economic times but always keep your head afloat!

When I was working full time I was laid off being part of the dot bomb era around 2001. I think you have to see it as firstly, it's not your fault and it's out of your hands. Therefore, mentally get your mind to adjust to that. Also, put your resume out there. Everywhere, online, send to friends and family, and to other departments in your company. You should also start saving more money than usual. I'd also start thinking about doing odd jobs of some sort. Now is the time to seek out your other talents. Good Luck!
