Finding a pair of jeans that fit well is a process for all of us. Here are some of my top ten commandments when shopping for jeans.
My ValSecret;
1. Embrace your shape; You need to define your body type and measure yourself. Once you do that picking out jeans becomes easier and you're not trying to fit into something that doesn't flatter you. Remember it's about shape, not size. Buy the best fitting jeans and the best style for your shape.
Pear Shaped: small shoulders/larger bottom
Hourglass: even on top and bottom
Rectangular: shoulders and hips are of equal width, with little waist definition
Diamond shape: broad shoulders
Round body: fuller shorter waist
Diamond: Narrow shoulders, small bust, broad hips generous thighs and slender calves.
2. Pick Pockets; pocket size, shape, and placement are a rule of thumb
round booty = wide pockets that are higher towards the waste band and spread apart
flat booty = smaller pockets that are closer together and further away from the waste band towards the leg.
3. Choose Denim Appropriate Colorwash; dark denim jeans always look polished and are most flattering. For straight body types, strategically placed washes or embellishments in the back pocket areas will attract attention to your hips. Light colored jeans in cold weather season is a fashion faux paux.
4. Make friends with a Tailor; when you choose your pair of jeans the most important part of the fit is around the upper half of your body. You can always hem your jeans to make the perfect fit. Avoid cuffs unless you are 5"5' or taller.
5. Don't go too Tight or Baggy; when you go tight you want to look sexy/classy, not sexy/trashy. Lowrise jeans and skinny jeans are NOT for everyone. Wearing tight jeans can also give you health issues. Avoid saggy or baggy pants, especially in the rear end. If the jeans are a bit loose, try the next smaller size: they may give a bit with use, especially those with some stretch.
6. Wear Heels- When you wear heels it tends to straighten your posture which perks up your butt, flattens your tummy, and give you that strut you need for your legs. Wearing pointed shoes with Boot-cut and flared jeans give a long and lean look, which is flattering to most women and the best with heels.
7. Be loyal to Cut and Denim; Once you have found a pair of jeans that fit you perfectly, why stray away from that? Unless your body type has changed, I would stick to the 'type' of jean that has complimented your body. If you love the way the pair of jeans fit and feel stay committed. I suggest you buy two pairs with minor differences.
8. Make Sure the Booty Looks Good; jeans were made to enhance your backside. The best way to do that is go with a stretchy denim. Pockets that are situated lower on the jeans make your bottom look higher.
9. Wear Accessories; wear belts and waistbands, they draw attention to your waist. Low slung belts are great for short torso's. Semi fitted tops, flowy tops or longer jackets that go past the knee to conceal.
10. Draw Attention to Your Best Feature; if you have long legs, a great butt, nice tummy, or nice hips get a denim that will bring the eye to that feature with the other 9 commandments in mind.
Here are the Jean Cuts to go by;
* Straight Leg Jeans: Traditional cut with a straight narrow leg that does not flare at the ankles
* Flared Leg: Jeans Narrow at the knee, and an extra wide flare at the leg. Most common leg type on low rise jeans.
* Boot Cut Jeans: Cut to skim the thigh with a slightly flared lower leg
* Tapered Leg: Jeans narrow towards the ankle
* Capri: A leg cut that usually ends just below the knee or at mid-calf. The term "crops" is sometimes used interchangeably with Capris, but should actually refer to pant legs that fall about three fourths of the way down the calf.
* Tight/Skinny: A close fit throughout the leg
* Stove Pipe: As the name implies, an over-sized straight leg cut
* Bell Bottoms: A wider, more exaggerated flare named and made popular in the 1960’s, often used with low rise jeans and ultra low rise jeans
* Cropped: Jeans can be cropped any length from the mid-calf to the knee. Ankle Length-Cut just above the ankle is used for a summery look
* Gaucho: Denim gaucho pants may be a passing fancy, but they sure are fun and can look great paired with the right boots.
* Cuffed: A Fold at the end of the legs. Not strictly a leg cut, but a common finish, sometimes added by the designer and sometimes by the user of the jeans for a personal touch.
