When traveling via air flight it can be expensive, but not always. I've been traveling for a very long time now and I know all the tricks of saving money when booking a flight.
Here are some of my ValSecrets on tricks to save money on travel.
Frequent Flyer Miles -
The frequent flyer program is an incentive program operated by an airline to reward customers for their continued loyalty. As a traveler, you earn free miles for the miles that you fly on a particular airline. It's cost effective for airlines to retain the customers they already have. So how do they reward you? The more frequently you fly with them, the greater your awards. You can also gain awards with using a credit card that is associated to an airline. Everytime you spend money on that credit card you receive points towards your miles.
Fly on Wednesday-
Airflights are always cheaper if you fly on Wednedays.
Book a round trip-
Booking a round trip on the same airline is cheaper since you are only taxed once for the booking.
Non-direct flights over seas-
When you book a flight overseas try booking a flight to an airport that has flights departing to your desired destination. For an example, if you are traveling to South America, you will find cheaper flights from Miami, then you will from New York or LA. Therefore, book a flight to Miami and connect to your flight from Miami to South America.
Pack light-
You don't want to overpack because now a lot of airlines are asking you to pay for your pieces of luggage you are not taking on board with you. Also, most airlines if your luggage is over 50lbs domestic and 70lbs international you will be charged 50 dollars or more.
Book your flight two weeks before or 24 hours before travel-
If you book your flight two weeks before you will get the best rates. However, if you look for a flight 24 hours before, sometimes you will find a cheap ticket due to airlines not being able to sell out the flight.
Booking online is cheaper-
When you book your ticket online they give you a 'online' discount vs. booking it over the phone. Also, check websites such as; www.sidestep.com, cheapflights.com, orbitz.com, expedia.com, farecompare.com, travelocity.com, lowfares.com, and priceline.com to compare prices with all airlines.
Travel during low season-
If you are dying to go somewhere try not book a flight when you know a lot of people are heading that way. Airlines take advantage of 'high season' when everyone wants to be at that place during that time. Why? Because they can. I suggest waiting the day after an event is over or check during low season time frames. You can get the same flight at half the price after the high season is over.
