I'm sure you've heard that in order to stay healthy you need to workout six days a week, eat a certain amount of fruit and vegetables daily and cut out processed foods, but following these guidelines isn't always easy.
So if you want to life a healthy life you need to change your game plan.

My valsecret - become mentally fit first.

During high school I wasn't a superior athlete. You know why? Because I didn't THINK the way I do now. I didn't realize the importance of pushing myself, so I settled. I didn't get satisfaction out of sweating and feeling fatigue after a grueling workout. I didn't care if I only ate cheez-its for lunch or Reese Peanut Butter cups for breakfast, because I didn't completly understand nutrition and the importance of being strong and fit.

Now I do.

So this is what I did to change my game plan.

I came up with an idea of what I wanted to look like, what activities I wanted to be able to do and I looked to celeb role models for inspiration.

I researched what foods I should eat, exercise plans, diets, etc. I put together lists, excel sheets and notes. I practiced my form and cooking healthier meals. I used to even write down what I ate and did at the gym every day. Keeping a log was a great way to get started and become focused. BUT what kept me focused and energized for each day was my mental game.

This is important. In order to jump start your health kick and maintain it you need to come up with a way to motivate yourself - no matter what. You need to find a way to get yourself into the gym and able to push through three sets of 15 even when all you want to do is lay on the couch.

Lately I've been telling myself *I'm an Olympian* I sometimes will be cruel and say to myself * You will get fat if you don't run* It works wonders for me. Some people have a tough time finding the positive and letting it change their mood. At first I did too but now I find a smile, a couple jumping jacks or some high energy music can get me moving to the gym.

Eating is another story. I will eat what ever I want. BUT I'm selective. Say I eat a bagel for breakfast - I'll basically avoid bread carbs again until dinner. I also try to eat a mix of fish, chicken, meat and veggies each week. Oh, and I cook a ton of meals on Sundays. This way I have healthy meals for the week and don't have to worry about preparing something unhealthy last minute. Everyone has their way of finding a balance so you just need to establish that. MY one mental tip - remind yourself that *drinking this glass of wine means running tomorrow* or *this cookie is yummy but if I eat it I'll need to do xx at the gym.* I basically come up with trade offs so I can still enjoy LIFE without having to avoid a lot of the naughty food pleasures.

These are great tips. I used to finish my whole plate or bag of chips but now I only eat until i'm full not stuffed. You're right it's all a mental game. My thought process is *if I eat the whole bag of chips I have to work out 20 minutes longer.
