I was misdiagnosed for 2 years by 8 doctors before finally being diagnosed with uterine cancer. In writing my N.Y. Times bestseller CANCER SCHMANCER, I wished to tell my cancer story in an informative yet funny way so that what happened to me, wouldn’t happen to others. But when I went on my book tour and spoke with thousands of people, I realized what happened to me had happened to millions of others of every age, race and gender. So I got to thinking that maybe it was no coincidence that I became famous, then got cancer, and lived to talk about it. Thus began my commitment to changing healthcare for every American from the Pacific to the Potomac.

Ladies, we must listen to our bodies because in the end whose life is it anyway??

Fortunately, I have never had cancer but both my parents are survivors, my mother having her first experience when she was 12. Your book has been a part of my library for the past 6 years, when I found out about it I purchased it right away because you have something that many don't when it comes to illnesses (inlcuding doctors) the drive, the right attitude and a positive one to name a few. It's a touchy subject for my parents and they had wanted to know why I would buy an inspirational book about cancer, was I expecting the same to happen to me? The truth is, I'm prepared for whatever happens in my life, and inspiration derived from others can be applied to your life in a variety in ways; not exclusively to the exact situation of the person doing the sharing. I admire my parents stories even if they don't and I admire yours. I myself was recently diagnosed with an illness of which symptoms began when I was 15! Long story short, I have spent the last 13 years being offered "symptom treatment" for various issues, but knew deep down even at a young age that what they needed to be looking for was the source. Once I was old enough I took matters in my own hands, did plenty of research and went through many doctor's until I found the right one and am now being properly treated and thank God that it wasn't something progressive. If only we all had a "Dr. House""it would be so much easier, but in reality we know our bodies best and I knew something was going on in my body that was effecting who I am organically, without all of the discomfort and without all of the side effects of the unnecessary meds they wanted me to be on. Thank you for such a wonderful book and for sharing such a major and personal part of you life with others.

i agree totally fran....at the end, whos life is it? its only our own body....we all need to urge that the health care bill be passed and that women everywhere can get help if needed....

Way back when doctors were not payed until they actually cured their patients. Sometimes I feel like we should go back to that practice. Healthcare needs to be changed in a big way!! Keep fighting for us Fran!

So true! There are so many resources out there to research symptoms, learn possible causes and/or tests that may help to diagnose you, and find doctors who take a comprehensive look at wellness and believe in testing before handing out meds! It may drive doctors nuts, but no one can take a "maybe" as a diagnosis. I think it's wonderful you are spreading that message to listen to our bodies first! Everything does happen for a reason!

My grandmother was misdiagnosed for 2 years. She was always at the doctors being tested for illnesses because she had back pains. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2001. Unfortunately, the cancer had spread all over her body and there was no hope for her. She was 72 when she passed. She was a special woman who had a heart of gold. Had there been a better healthcare system she could have lived a few more years with her family. Your message and strength is so powerful. Thank you!

My aunt was misdiagnosed for years. They kept prescribing her medication for illnesses she didn't have. Than years later she was finally told she has MS. So Fran, I'm so glad you are bringing attention to this. The medical field needs to be tweeked so fewer people are misdiagnosed. Keep the secrets coming. They are great!
