High School guidance counselors usually encourage students to go to college the fall following graduation, but that isn't always the best advice. I suggest taking time to figure out what you want before going to school. For me, it only took the summer before college to finalize my goals, but others more time. If you are getting ready for college or even graduate school, but don't know what to major in, I suggest volunteering or talking to people working in careers related to your interests. If you still don't know what to major in afterwards, I would suggest holding off on going to an expensive school. Instead consider going to community college for the first two years and transferring when you know what you'd like to do. You may even want to look into taking night classes while working in your field of interest or just going to the college of your dreams and doing everything you can, the first semester, to figure out what you want to major in. Think about it this way, school is expensive and you don't want to waste the experience on classes that won't help you get to the career you really want. Why spend money on an English Major if you want to be a Chemist? It just doesn't make sense. So be smart. Think it out and make the most of your education. It really can open the world to you - but only if you make the most of it.

That's is an interesting take and I have heard many others say that it's a smart choice. Honestly, when you are 18 years old, do you really know what you want to do for the rest of your life? Odds are not so high. As you get older you find what stimulates you and how you want to invest your money in your education.
