If you are getting married and having trouble stopping your parents or future in-laws from taking over - you aren't alone. I've seen many brides-to-be cry over how they are loosing control of their own wedding or grooms complain about how the future in-laws are out of control. I always remind them that it is not their parents' wedding and they need to stop letting them make all the decisions. Listen to their ideas and thoughts, but don't be afraid to make your own interests heard. If you and your husband want a small wedding but your parents don't - compromise. If his parents are paying for the majority of the wedding, let them arrange some of the party aspects or help pick out the DJ. If you are paying for the wedding you should make the majority of the decisions but remember to compromise over aspects of the wedding that your parents feel strongly about. For example if the parents want you to get married by a certain minister - why fight it? -just make them happy. Another idea is laying out the wedding plan and telling them where you are flexible. If the parents are putting money toward the money, make a budget and show them what their money can cover. If you only have enough money for 100 people but the parents want 200, show them how much more that would cost and offer to invite more if they help pay x. If you think smart and treat your wedding like a business you could assign jobs and make everyone feel like they have control. That is what I did and I think it worked best.

Good luck. Let me know if you have any problems with the rents. I have tons of advise on dealing with the parents during wedding time.
