Can being in love be making you fat? One study discussed at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society found that young women who were dating gained an average of 15 pounds over 5 years and the newly married gained 24 pounds. In fact, a study published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that if one spouse becomes obese, the other is 37 percent more likely to do so as well. Why? Research has shown that eating a meal in a social setting, no matter who you are with, can cause a person to eat about 33 percent more. Also, sharing living space with a person can also influence eating and exercise habits. Perhaps being single probably also gives people an incentive to be slimmer, as married individuals ten to put on weight when they get married. Here are some tips to help you fight the creeping pounds that often come with a romantic relationship: 1) DON’T DITCH YOUR WORKOUTS. If an activity was significant to you before you were in a relationship, it should still be important once you're in the relationship. Unless your fitness level and goals are exactly the same as your partner's, maintaining your own program helps you keep from losing your current fitness level or working so hard that you risk injury. 2) BOND AT THE GYM INSTEAD OF THE TABLE. Make working out together part of the fun. Try something that's new and interesting for both of you. 3) BE SUPPORTIVE. You and your partner she talk about your fitness goals and how you’re feeling and help each other stay motivated and on track. Don’t make the other feel guilty for working out without you or wanting to pass on a fancy fat-filled dinner. 4) COMPROMISE your meals. If your partner likes burger joints and you prefer sushi, alternate restaurant picks. Just because your partner likes junk foods doesn’t mean you have to trade in your carrot sticks as vice-versa.
